After many years of getting close, the Philadelphia Eagles finally played in a Superbowl last night.

Eagles Flag

For those that haven't heard the result: Superbowl XXXIX was a nailbiter, but a disappointing outcome for Philly.

The New England Patriots beat the Eagles 24-21 in a tough match.

The saddest part was that one of the Philadelphia newspapers even predicted the outcome and the margin. (Although announcing it on the front page was a disaster for pre-Superbowl newspaper sales.)

Philadelphia fans have an appalling reputation for being mean spirited, callous, vocal and proud of it.

In a particularly snowy Philadelphia home game, Santa Claus entered Veterans stadium at half-time - only to be booed and pelted with snowballs by the surly Eagles fans.

How would Philadelphians take such a tragic loss?

I had predicted rioting, looting and burning in the streets regardless of whether the Eagles won or lost, so with my steel-capped boots firmly laced, I was primed for some public mayhem.

It was truly pathetic to watch folks file out of Philadelphia's pubs in dejection.

People were slowly, quietly walking the streets with their heads down. It was like a scene from every B-grade zombie movie you've ever seen. I swear I heard some people making low moaning sounds.

We couldn't even riot like champions! The worst behaviour I saw was a lone fan carrying an orange traffic cone who kicked over a newspaper dispenser.

Ooooooh - anarchy in the streets, I'm so scared ooooooooh.

If he was waiting for a booty of quarters to roll out of the news dispenser he chose the wrong paper. Philadelphia Weekly is free. Jackass! He should have knocked over a USA Today stand.

Then I wet my pants laughing when I flicked on the TV and saw a group of Eagles fans attempting to burn a Patriots jersey.

Despite multiple attempts, it wouldn't catch fire.

Pathetic!

Philly can't even get a simple effigy burning right. Even cavemen knew how to make fire!

So all I have to show from Superbowl XXXIX is a headache that will last until lunchtime and a heartache that will last until September.

Go Eagles! There's always next year.
